About the Role
We are seeking a personable, commercially minded Business DevelopmentManager to maximise the performance of our existing customer base. This role is centred on relationship management, commercial optimisation, and operational alignment to drive sustainable growth.
Alongside customer development, you will play a pivotal role in internal cross‑functional improvement projects—from operational efficiency to sustainability initiatives and compliance awareness. As part of the senior management team, you will be encouraged to challenge thinking, bring forward new ideas, and help shape the long‑term strategy of the business.

Key Responsibilities
Account Growth & Customer Management
- Maximise growth within existing customer accounts through increased volume, product range penetration, and improved profitability.
- Build strong, long‑term relationships.
- Act as the main commercial point of contact, delivering outstanding customer service.
- Conduct regular customer visits to maintain strong engagement and support ongoing growth.
- Identify opportunities for upselling, cross-selling, and operational improvements based on customer needs.
Commercial Strategy, Forecasting & Reporting
- Develop robust account plans that support long‑term commercial stability and growth.
- Provide clear forecasts, margin analysis, and performance reporting to support planning and decision making.
- Prepare commercial proposals, presentations, and category insights.
- Contribute to strategic discussions on pricing, product innovation, and customer development.
- Analyse sales patterns, efficiencies, and customer behaviour to identify commercial optimisation opportunities.
Internal Operational Efficiency
- Work closely with Operations, Technical, Supply Chain, and Finance teams to ensure customer needs are met efficiently and sustainably.
- Support improvements in fulfilment, planning, forecasting, stock availability, and logistics performance.
- Feed customer insights into the organisation to drive continuous improvement.
- Support development of internal systems and staffing that improve customer service and cost efficiency.
Agricultural Sustainability
- Maintain knowledge of agricultural sustainability, farming practices, welfare standards, and environmental expectations.
- Support customer conversations on sustainability claims, supply chain transparency, and responsible sourcing.
- Work with internal teams on sustainability projects—including waste reduction, energy efficiency, carbon reduction, and farm‑level initiatives.
- Translate sustainability expectations into commercial opportunities and practical improvements.
Project Management
- Lead commercial, operational, and sustainability projects from concept through to delivery.
- Manage timelines, communication, stakeholders, and measurable outcomes.
- Support new product introductions, packaging changes, and customer‑specific initiatives.
- Track project progress, manage risks, and ensure delivery aligns with business and customer timelines.
Compliance Support
- Support understanding of packing centre compliance and farm‑level standards (no prior compliance experience needed, just a willingness to learn).
- Bring a problem‑solving mindset to audit outcomes, specification changes, and customer technical requirements.
- Provide commercial insight to complement technical compliance discussions.
Leadership & Future Team Development
- Contribute to the future development of a small commercial team as the function grows.
- Coach colleagues to promote consistent customer management and commercial delivery.
- Play a proactive role in senior management discussions and long-term commercial strategy.
About You
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong experience in account management, business development, or commercial roles within FMCG, food manufacturing, agriculture, or distribution.
- Proven ability to grow existing accounts, increase volumes, and improve profitability.
- Exceptional relationship‑building and communication skills.
- Strong project management capability, with experience managing cross‑functional stakeholders.
- Highly organised, analytical, and commercially astute.
- Confident in negotiation, problem-solving, and influencing without authority.
- Proactive, self-motivated, and hands-on.
- An interest in agricultural sustainability with willingness to deepen knowledge.
- Capable of supporting compliance‑related conversations with an inquisitive mindset.
Desirable
- Experience in agricultural supply chains, responsible sourcing, or sustainability‑focused roles.
- Understanding of retailer sustainability, welfare, or transparency expectations.
- Qualifications in Business, Agriculture, Environmental Studies, or related fields.
